Lavender and St. John's Wort

Lavender:

Lavender is probably one of the most popular herbs which promotes relaxation—this fragrant healing herb has an incredibly relaxing effect on the mind and body. It also has a stimulating edge, acting as a tonic to the nervous system, and restoring vitality to people suffering from nervous exhaustion. It is also a sedative; known to help relieve nervous headaches, migraines, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. The natural organic compounds in its leaves and flowers can be ground between the fingers and then rubbed onto the temples. This topical application can soothe the body and mind by relieving anxious thoughts and balancing the mood. Lavender can also be used as an infusion in filtered water for similar effects. The antioxidant components in lavender can impact the endocrine system to lower the levels of stress hormones in the body. If I were regularly struggling with insomnia, sleep apnea or restless sleep patterns—I would be bringing in lavender tea, and temple treatments (as noted above) into my nightly routine. I also seem to notice (for me) that lavender can help to clear my mind of negative thoughts.

St. John’s Wort:

St. John’s wort is an anti-depressant nature. I dabbled with this healing herb when I was trying to get myself off of the anti-depressants I was prescribed (after suffering through 2 accidents back-to-back) The health benefits of St. John’s wort extend beyond depression though, as this healing herb helped me through anxiety and mood swings as well. It did this by helping to regulate the hormonal balance in my body, plus it was helpful at resetting my internal clock, while providing me with my sleeplessness, irritability, and chronic fatigue (which always seemed to have been my symptoms when I was under acute stress). St. John’s wort had the ability to eliminate chronic stress hormones from my body—which was key, because excess stress hormones can affect various organs and causing impaired function. This medicinal herb can also help to improve overall health and cognitive function. When a person is under chronic stress AND PMS’ing at the same time--or in menopause. Mood swings can be off the charts! St. John’s wort can be highly beneficial for women in both these categories; Its chemical constituents help in reducing mood swings and anxiety in menopausal women. Moreover, this healing herb can help to reduce the severity of cramping, and pre-menstrual irritation and depression.
