Mullein Leaf (Verbascum)
Mullein flowers and leaves contain powerful anti-bacterial and expectorant properties that have the ability to substantially remove phlegm from the lungs and mucous from the body. This makes it a highly effective remedy for those who suffer from bronchitis, (like I did). It's also very beneficial for those experiencing lung congestion, colds, flu, asthma, emphysema, whopping cough, or any other respiratory ailment. Mullein also contains anti-spasmodic properties which makes it helpful for reducing both menstrual and stomach cramps... Now, I may no longer suffer with these conditions, but needless to say, this medicinal herb will always be in my healing tool kit.
Historically, mullein was used as a treatment for tuberculosis as far back as the 16th century and some believed that if mullein was taken in the early stages of the disease, that it could bring about a full recovery. Mullein’s strong anti-viral abilities also make it a potent remedy for the flu, shingles viruses, herpes viruses, Epstein Barr, and Staph infections.
So what other sort of symptoms or conditions would I use mullein leaf for?
If I was dealing with digestive problems such as diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, hemorrhoids, and intestinal worms—I would bring mullein into my herbal infusions. If I suffered with joint pain or muscle pain, I would incorporate this medical herb into my herbal infusions. Mullein contains a compound called verbascoside, which is an anti-inflammatory and particularly useful in helping to ease joint and muscle pain. If I was a migraine sufferer, Mullein would be part of my healing protocol, as it’s known to be highly beneficial in providing migraine relief. If insomnia and anxiety were troubling me, I would use this healing herb in conjunction with California poppy and meadowsweet-- as mullein has natural sedative properties and has been used to help treat both of these conditions. Mullein oil (mullein extract in an olive oil base) is a highly effective remedy for ear infections and ear aches and can be safely used with children and adults alike.
