Sweet almond oil is extracted from (you guessed it!) sweet almonds.  Originating in Asia and the Middle East, almonds weren’t brought to North America until the 19th century.  Although the end product of this extraction doesn’t taste so sweet, don’t let that fool you. Sweet almond oil is so nourishing to the skin, and is also great for the heart and the colon, and has even been shown to help prevent diabetes and cancer.

Sweet almond oil’s claim to fame is its high concentration of Vitamin E, which readily helps dry skin conditions (such as eczema or psoriasis), and is safe for sensitive and baby skin. Sweet almond oil is also has antioxidant properties, which makes it great as UV protection.  With it’s Vitamin A content, sweet almond oil can help with preventing acne as well. Absorption of these wonderful healing properties are best when the oil is warmed to body temperature, which is why we love using this in our bar soap and sunscreen, as the application of these products automatically activates the oil’s wonderful properties.

For more information on this awesome oil, check into using it in pet health and as a potential biodiesel fuel! Recently a study showed that sweet almond oil is an effective antidote (taken orally) to aluminum phosphide, a highly toxic and poisonous pesticide used on crops in developing countries which causes many deaths every year (from poisoning and from suicide).  That, in and of itself, is absolutely incredible! Thank you, almond oil, for being so “sweet” to us!
