Fo-Ti Root (He Shou Wu)
I’ve only started to use Fo-Ti since the summer, so my experience with this Chinese herb is probably the newsest herb that I have added to my herbal pantry. I originally sought it out for longevity and vitality, but with further research, I learned that it could have some positive impacts on my hair too. Fo-Ti (Also called He Shou Wu) is said to improve hair growth, but it can also help to reduce hair loss. The verdict is still out on how this happens exactly. But a 2015 study suggests that Fo-Ti stimulates hair growth by working on the FGF-7 gene, which encodes proteins specific to epithelial cell growth (and therefore hair growth) when taken internally. It also stimulates SHH expression. Studies suggest that the SHH gene, a crucial growth regulator in embryonic hair follicles, may also have an effect on postnatal hair growth when administered topically (so needless to say, I wont be afraid to mist my hair with fo-ti infusions) Don’t know if it’s going to work, but I’m sure as heck going to give it the old college try ;) One last note I’d like to share, its said that Fo-Ti can benefit the hair with its ability to significantly boost color. Some research shows that Fo-Ti has a positive impact on grey hair--both to better maintain your natural color and delay the onset of new grays… since I have quite a few, it will be interesting to see what happens with my colour—although, I really do love, and have embraced my salt & pepper hair wholeheartedly.
