Valerian & Passionflower

Managing my stress is something I have been consciously working on for a few years. While adjusting my mindset, and controlling my own emotions was a huge part of my journey.  I found that incorporating healing herbs with nervine qualities was a necessary addition inside my stress-management strategies. I also gravitated towards blending my herbs; choosing herbs which would reduce anxiety, tension and provide sedative qualities were the herbs which I gravitated towards blending. Herbs can work differently for different people, but I have experimented with blending several herbs, and I will share with you all the blends which I felt to be beneficial for me.

Valerian root has tremendous sedative and tranquilizing properties which provides significant benefit to the central nervous system and the muscular system. Valerian contains valepotriate and isovaleric acid which gives this medicinal herb it's calming and relaxing qualities. If I suffered with chronic insomnia, headaches, anxiety, tension, or nervousness, I would be sure to bring valerian root into my life.

I like to blend my valerian root with passionflower. The combination of these 2 herbs provides a synergistic quality which has positive effects on mood, without causing cognitive impairment. Passionflower is best known for it's relaxing and calming effects and used to promote a restful sleep. I like this herb because it can  boost GABA levels in the brain. 

Gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, which means that it helps to induce relaxation and sleep.  It’s produced naturally in the brain, and passionflower can work to increase this.
